Practical Discernment

“Wisdom” – the spiritual insight offered by God to understand and apply Biblical truth to daily life. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him (James 1:5).

Is it possible that the present trends of Christianity are more driven by reactions and supposed remedies than by Holy Spirit insight into studied-out truth? Is it, as well, probable that the overstating of God’s “sovereignty” and an over emphasis on God’s “grace” has depreciated the reality of His glory and man’s guilt before Him?

When does “sovereignty” become no more than determinism and/or fatalism? And when does “grace” become little more than a deceptive circling-around God’s unapproachable glory and man’s glaring guilt?

The sovereignty of God and the grace of God are glorious revelations that magnify the praiseworthy character of God. However, when sovereignty is twisted to nurture irresponsibility and grace is tweaked to justify unholiness of life, the church is in an undiscerning peril.

Is it possible that we have fallen pray to simply repeating contemporary phrases rather than proclaiming “the whole counsel of God”? and is it not possible that “itching ears” and willful hearts are behind our less holy thoughts about God and our relaxed concern for personal holiness?
